When the Buddha Remained Quiet

It's my understanding that when disciples approached Lord Buddha with certain questions he didn't answer them.  There are some that are called the "imponderables" that will lead to vexation and madness if pursued and there were some that were some to which he didn't offer response.

Putting aside for a moment the fact that the Buddha taught about the samsaric realms that include gods and goddesses, it's my understanding that he didn't answer when people approached him with questions about a creator god.  There's countless reasons why he may have done this.  The first that springs to mind is that the question simply doesn't assist the questioner in finding cessation to suffering.  But is there a more complex reason that the Buddha didn't reply?

I don't have an answer in mind that I'm withholding, it's just a curiosity.  So it's my understanding at this point that the Buddha didn't reply when asked about the existence of a God.

Of course basic Buddhism teaches that samsara is without beginning and end so a creator god is ruled out.  Yet the Buddha chose silence in these instances and I wonder how many and far-reaching the questions put to Him extended.
